Bright IDEAS PSST Application

This workshop is funded by the National Cancer Institute based on a grant we submitted titled "Problem-Solving Skills Training for Clinicians Providing Psychosocial Care in Pediatric Oncology." [1 R25 CA183725-01A1] Since this training to disseminate this evidence-based model of care is supported by a grant from the NCI, which has certain reporting stipulations, if you participate in the Bright IDEAS PSST workshop your participation in the workshop is based on meeting all of the following requirements:

A. You will attend the complete workshop (1.5 days).

B. After the workshop you will:

1. Implement PSST
a. Utilize PSST with a minimum of 3 individuals in pediatric oncology over the 5 months after the workshop ends. These individuals could be caregivers, AYA patients, siblings, or a dyad such as two parents or a parent and AYA child, etc. Since the workshops are funded by the NCI, this minimum requirement must be met in the context of pediatric oncology.
b. For each of these individuals/dyads, you will:
i. Teach the basic steps of PSST [i.e., Bright IDEAS];
ii. Work through a minimum of 3 problems so they can learn and practice the new skill set (the problems may/may not be directly related to the child's illness such as negotiating a new work schedule or arranging care for the well children at home); and
iii. Review how to use PSST in the future.
c. Implement the intervention with one individual/dyad within one month of the workshop and implement the intervention with a second individual/dyad within two months of the workshop.

2. Participate in four 1-hour consultation conference calls (times arranged during the workshop)
a. Calls occur 1, 2, 3, and 5 months post-training.
b. These are small group calls (4-6 participants) that will allow you to:
i. Discuss your work with PSST with workshop leaders and peers; and
ii. Provide feedback about implementation of PSST.

3. Forms (available on request before you commit)
a. Complete a brief [< 5 minutes] follow-up form of demographic characteristics of the families with whom you are implementing PSST and your progress prior to each conference call.
b. Complete brief [< 5 minutes]. Follow-up evaluation forms at 6 months and 12 months post-training.





4. Supervisor Support Letter

a. To ensure that our trainees are able to use their training effectively, we require each participant to discuss their attendance at the training and their participation in the four (4) follow-up consultation conference calls with their supervisor and verify their supervisor's support for these activities. We have a pre-written letter that supervisors can sign and email back in PDF form.
